Robby and Mat's Week 1 Winning Bathroom on The Block

Robby and Mat's Week 1 Winning Bathroom on The Block: A Masterclass in Warm Minimalism

"The Block is back, and week 1 did not disappoint! As always, the competition was fierce, but it was Robby and Mat who stole the spotlight with their beautifully curated bathroom, seamlessly blending soft minimalism with earthy warmth. As an interior design enthusiast, I couldn’t resist diving into the details of what made this bathroom a standout and why it’s already inspiring homeowners across the country."
The Blue Space

A calm, contemporary escape

From the moment you step into Robby and Mat’s bathroom, there’s a sense of serenity. The space is drenched in natural light thanks to a generous skylight and a clever use of glass, while the layered tones of warm beige and natural timber instantly calm the senses. This isn’t just a bathroom, it’s a tranquil retreat designed to slow you down and encourage relaxation.

Their approach to design was clearly thoughtful, prioritising harmony, flow, and subtle luxury over flashiness. Every detail feels considered, creating a space that’s modern, timeless, and exceptionally livable.

Materials that ground the space

The room is enveloped in soft, square textured wall tiles that run from floor to ceiling, offering a handmade, earthy aesthetic. These tiles provide a gentle, tactile backdrop that feels both artisanal and modern. The terrazzo-look benchtop on the floating vanity adds a refined touch, balancing texture with polish, while the warm timber cabinetry brings an organic richness that prevents the palette from becoming too sterile.

A palette of soft neutrals

The colour palette is effortlessly inviting. Sand-toned tiles, creamy whites, and natural wood hues create a cohesive and cocooning environment. Rather than relying on contrast, Robby and Mat embraced tone-on-tone layering to great effect. This choice enhances the sense of calm and makes the bathroom feel more expansive.

Touches of gunmetal throughout the tapware subtly break up the softness, injecting a contemporary edge while staying within the warm spectrum.

Fixtures that marry form and function

The gunmetal tapware is a clear highlight, offering a muted metallic glow without overpowering the other design elements. The wall-mounted basin mixer and bath spout are sleek and streamlined, echoing the bathroom’s quiet sophistication. Even the accessories, like the soft green striped towels and simple bench stool, have been carefully chosen to tie in with the overall palette.

The mirrored cabinetry above the vanity features an arched centrepiece, a subtle nod to Art Deco, and cleverly hides ample storage, helping maintain the clutter-free look.

Clever layout and flow

The layout is a triumph in both form and function. The bath is tucked neatly into one end of the room, framed by a curved fluted glass shower screen that adds visual interest and a soft divide. This allows both the shower and bath to share the same wet zone without feeling cramped or awkward.

The floating vanity enhances the sense of space, while underfloor tile continuity ensures the room feels cohesive and grounded. The shower features a dual-function showerhead, rain and handheld, catering to both indulgence and practicality.

If you’re planning your own bathroom renovation, take note, this space is full of inspiration for anyone craving a calm, minimalist retreat at home.
