View all productsA privacy knob set is a door knob with a built-in lock, operated by a turn or push privacy button on the inside face, designed for bathrooms and bedrooms where a room needs to be secured temporarily but not with a full key. Unlike a passage knob, which never locks, or a keyed entry set for external doors, a privacy set sits in between, giving occupants control over the door from inside without needing a key.
How the privacy button mechanism works
The inside knob has a small turn button or push button set into its face. Pressing or turning this button engages the latch so the door can't be opened from the outside knob. On the outside face, a small slot or hole is built into the knob or rose, allowing the lock to be released in an emergency using a flat screwdriver or a small pin, without needing a key. This emergency release is a standard safety feature on privacy sets, since it means nobody can be accidentally locked in a bathroom with no way to get help from outside.
Where privacy knob sets belong
Privacy sets are specified for bathrooms, ensuites, powder rooms and bedrooms, anywhere a person inside needs the option to lock the door against someone opening it accidentally, but where full keyed security isn't necessary. This makes it a different specification from hallway or living area doors, which take a passage set with no lock function at all, and from external doors, which need a keyed entry set.
Privacy knob versus privacy lever
Privacy knob sets and privacy lever sets use the same internal button mechanism, the only difference is the handle shape. Knobs give a rounded, twist-to-open grip that suits traditional or heritage-style interiors, while levers are easier to operate one-handed. For a bathroom door that gets used with wet or soapy hands, some renovators prefer the lever for grip, but the knob remains a common and reliable choice, particularly where the rest of the home's door hardware is knob-based for consistency.
Sizing and door prep
This range fits standard 54mm to 60mm crossbore door preps with a 60mm or 70mm backset latch, the same as passage and entry knob sets, so a privacy knob can generally be swapped into an existing bathroom door without new drilling. The privacy latch itself is slightly different internally from a passage latch, incorporating the locking mechanism, but the external hole dimensions match.
Finishes
Privacy knob sets in this range come in matte black, brushed nickel, satin chrome, polished chrome and brushed brass, matching the finish families used across passage and entry knob ranges. Keeping bathroom and bedroom door hardware in the same finish as hallway doors elsewhere in the home avoids an obvious mismatch when doors are viewed together along a corridor.
Choosing a privacy knob set
If the door leads to a bathroom, ensuite or bedroom and needs to lock from the inside without a key, a privacy knob set is the correct specification. Check the existing door prep dimensions before ordering, and match the finish to any passage or entry hardware already installed elsewhere in the home for a coordinated result.
