Wall Hung Vanities: What to know before you buy
A wall hung vanity, also known as a floating vanity, is a bathroom vanity mounted directly to the wall with no legs or plinth touching the floor. This design leaves a visible gap beneath the cabinet, which makes the bathroom floor appear larger and simplifies cleaning underneath. What is the difference between a wall hung vanity and a freestanding vanity?
A wall hung vanity attaches to the wall via a bracket system, with the cabinet suspended above the floor. A freestanding vanity, by contrast, sits directly on the floor and carries its own weight without wall support.
The practical differences matter when planning a renovation. Wall hung vanities require solid wall construction, typically noggins or a plywood-lined wall, to support the bracket and cabinet weight. Freestanding vanities place no such requirement on the wall and can be installed on any stable floor.
Wall hung vanities also make floor cleaning easier, since a mop or vacuum can pass underneath without obstruction. This is one reason they are common in bathrooms designed for easier long-term maintenance.
What sizes do wall hung vanities come in?

Cabinet depth is a separate consideration from width. Most wall hung vanities sit between 360mm and 465mm deep, so it's worth checking this measurement against the available bathroom floor space before ordering.
Three things to sort out before installation
- The wall behind it A wall hung vanity carries its full weight through the wall fixings with no legs and no floor contact. That means the wall behind needs either solid timber studs or a structural frame built into the cavity. Your builder or plumber will assess this, but bring it up early. If the wall needs a frame built in, that has to happen before waterproofing and tiling. Finding out after the tiles are down is an expensive conversation.
- The waste pipe With the floor clear, the waste pipe exits through the wall rather than the floor. This is a completely standard adjustment for any licensed plumber, not unusual or complicated, but it has to be confirmed and positioned correctly before the waterproofing membrane goes in. Don't assume your plumber will figure it out on the day.
- The install height Agree on the rim height with your installer before fixing points are set. Standard is 850 to 900mm from finished floor to basin rim. Taller households often go to 950mm. Moving the fixing points after the tiles are on means patching tiles. Decide once, decide before.
Finishes worth considering
Timber floating vanities from Ingrain and Timberline bring warmth that painted finishes can't replicate. If you're going wall hung, the exposed floor often runs in timber-look tile, and a genuine timber vanity against that background is a strong combination.
Coloured finishes, deep charcoal, sage, navy, dusty stone, are particularly effective in a floating format because the visual weight is already reduced by the exposed floor. Fluted fronts work well here too: texture without the need for patterned tiles to compete with.
White and off-white remain the safe choice and for good reason. They work in every setting, age well, and go with everything. Choosing between a wall hung vanity and other storage options
A wall hung vanity is not always the only storage solution needed in a bathroom. Many renovators pair a wall hung vanity with a tallboy for additional linen or toiletry storage, particularly in smaller bathrooms where under-basin storage alone isn't sufficient.
