Your washing machine, dryer, sink and any laundry tub need space too. Measure the width, depth and height of each appliance, plus the distances between them and nearby walls. Also record where plumbing, power points and waste outlets are situated, this ensures your appliances and cabinetry align with services and that space is properly accounted for.

If you’re installing cabinets, measure the space where they will go. For each area, note:

• Depth: From the front face to the wall
• Width: From one end of the cabinet space to the other
• Height: Floor to ceiling, or between countertop and underside of wall cabinets.

These measurements help you pick the right cabinet sizes and identify how much storage you can add without overcrowding the room.

Finally, draw a simple floor plan with all measurements labelled, room size, fixtures, appliances, and utilities. This visual reference ensures accuracy, helps with planning your layout, and is invaluable if you’re consulting a designer or installer. Being organised at this stage will save time, money and stress later.
