Nidus door hardware buying guide

Nidus is a door hardware brand with several ranges, from round levers and knurled levers to flush pulls for cavity doors and locks for sliding doors. The ranges differ in shape, material and fit, so the range name matters more than the brand name when you choose. This collection brings the whole Nidus range together, including the Manital solid brass levers that sit under it. This guide shows how the ranges are organised, which material and function each suits, which items are sold without a latch, and which Nidus collection to open next. How the Nidus ranges are organised

The Nidus ranges are grouped by name and purpose. Mediterranean is a collection of door hardware for residential and commercial interiors that combines classic European style with modern Australian living. Venetian is Italian-inspired minimalist hardware in 304 grade stainless steel. ATZ is security hardware for high-traffic environments, and Ozi Lock is a mortice lock range for hinged and sliding doors, engineered and assembled in Australia. The Project Series covers the Lonsdale, Spring and Collins ranges, Mardeco covers cavity sliding sets, flush pulls and privacy locks, and Manital is designed and made in Italy. Not every range is sold on this site, and the collections below cover the ones that are.

Lever ranges

The Nidus Spring and Nidus Collins levers are zinc alloy on a round rose, 128mm long with a 60mm projection. Doors 34 to 45mm thick and a 60mm backset. Both ranges come as passage, privacy, dummy, key-in entrance and combination entry and deadbolt sets, and the Spring range also lists a Eurobolt double cylinder. The Nidus Collins dummy lever comes in a left hand version, and the other dummy levers are single handles. Knurled levers

The Nidus Knurled Domici is a levers-only set in graphite grey, satin brass and matte black. The levers are supplied with the latch sold separately. Nidus sells tubular latches as separate items in matching finishes, so add one when you order. Check the box contents of every Domici product page, because a lever set without a latch cannot operate the door.

Mediterranean levers

The Nidus Mediterranean Metro and Altro sets come in satin chrome and matte black. The latch is sold separately, while the Metro and Altro privacy sets include a latch or privacy latch in the box. Mardeco flush pulls and cavity sets

The Nidus Mardeco range is zinc alloy in chrome and nickel finishes. The sizes: the radius flush pull is 203 by 45mm, the rectangular flush pull is 190 by 45mm, and a long plate is 257mm by 43.5mm. The privacy sets suit doors 34 to 50mm thick with 50mm and 35mm backsets. The entrance Euro lock set suits doors from 35mm thick and comes with the cylinder sold separately, and a snib lock set comes with an inside snib and no cylinder. Sliding cavity door sets

The Nidus sliding cavity sets use a round or square 65 by 65mm backplate and include an end pull. The privacy sets suit doors 32 to 47mm thick on a 60mm backset. The lockable entrance sets suit doors 35 to 55mm thick, list a 3 pin keying and a 60mm backset. Check which version you need: passage, privacy or entrance. ATZ and Ozi Lock

The Nidus ATZ range includes a stainless steel entrance pull handle set with a single cylinder and a stainless steel single cylinder deadbolt with a 60mm backset. Manital solid brass levers

The Manital levers and knobs are solid brass, 130 to 140mm long. The Manital Imola, Erica, Ratio, Tosca, Amleto and Blade passage product pages and the K410 knob list the latch as sold separately, and the Manital privacy sets list one latch. The finishes include satin chrome, polished chrome, polished brass, satin brass and satin nickel. Read the box line before you order, because the latch is the part that fits the door.

Material

The material differs by family. The Spring, Collins, Lonsdale, Mardeco and sliding cavity sets are zinc alloy. The Manital sets are solid brass. The ATZ pull handle set and deadbolt and the Nidus 600mm pull handle are stainless steel, and the pull handle is 304 grade stainless steel with a 67mm projection. The Nidus Domici, Metro and Altro have no material stated, so confirm it before you buy if the material matters to you. Check the product page for the exact material and finish of each Nidus set.

Numbers that decide fit

Door handles are not universal, so check door thickness, backset, the bore hole, handing and function before any order. The Spring, Collins and Lonsdale ranges suit doors 34 to 45mm thick, the Mardeco sets 34 to 50mm, and the sliding cavity sets 32 to 55mm, with 60mm backsets on most levers and 35mm and 50mm backsets on the Mardeco sets. Measure your own door, and photograph the old set before you order.

Door stops, hinges and catches

Keep the hinges and stops in the finish of the handle. The collection lists Nidus fixed pin hinges at 100 by 75 by 2.5mm in graphite grey, wall mounted door stops in gun metal grey, and a concealed magnetic catch in an extra heavy duty version. See hinges and door stops.

Finishes

The Nidus finishes include chrome, brushed nickel, matte black, satin brass, graphite grey and gun metal grey. See matte black, brushed nickel, chrome, brass and gun metal door handles. Finish names vary between makers, so compare Nidus finishes against other hardware on the door.

Which Nidus family for which job

A simple map helps. For a round, plain lever on an interior door with the latch in the box, use the Spring or Collins sets. For a knurled lever, use the Knurled Domici and add the latch. For a solid brass lever or knob, use the Manital sets. For a cavity sliding door, use the Mardeco or sliding cavity sets. For an entrance door with a lever and a lock, use the Spring or Collins key-in or combination sets. For a stainless steel pull and deadbolt, use the ATZ range. The choice by function and fit comes first, and the finish follows.

Entrance sets and deadbolts

The Spring and Collins ranges include entrance sets in two forms. A key-in lever set carries the key lock in the lever. A combination entry and deadbolt set pairs a lever with a deadbolt. The Spring and Lonsdale Eurobolt sets are double cylinder, which means a key is needed on both sides. A double cylinder can create emergency risks, since occupants need a key to leave quickly, so keep a spare key near the door out of reach of intruders. The ATZ deadbolt is a single cylinder, which means keyed outside with a thumb turn inside. Read the cylinder line on every entrance product page and the box contents for the keys. Lever or knob

A knob is compact and traditional, operated by turning, and a lever is a longer handle that is pressed down to operate the latch and is easier to use. Latches and handing

The latch is the part that sits inside the door edge. The Nidus tubular latches are separate items in graphite grey and other finishes, and the Spring, Collins and Mediterranean privacy sets list a latch or privacy latch in the box. Handing differs across the Nidus products, so check the product page for a handing line. The dummy levers are single handles, so a door that needs one on each face needs two. See dummy door handles.

Replacing an existing handle

Check the existing holes first, measure the backset, which is the distance from the spindle centre to the centre of the latch, and check that the new plates cover the old cut-outs. A larger rose can cover old marks but does not mean the handle fits an existing hole, and keeping your current latch needs a compatible spindle and mechanism. A 60mm backset on most sets, so measure the old backset before you assume a match. Photograph the old set.

Care

Clean handles with a soft cloth and mild soapy water, and avoid bleach, abrasives and harsh chemicals. Brushed or knurled textures show marks less than smooth finishes. For solid brass, do not use brass polish or metal cleaners on lacquered finishes. Follow the care instructions for the finish you choose.

Common mistakes

These are the mistakes to avoid. The first is ordering a lever set sold without the latch. The second is ordering a Euro lock set and forgetting the cylinder, which is sold separately on some product pages. The third is ordering a single dummy lever when a door needs one on each face. The fourth is using a cavity set on a hinged door, or a lever set on a sliding door. The fifth is ordering by finish before checking the door thickness and backset. Choose the function first, then the range, then the finish. Use Spring or Collins for a round lever with a latch in the box, and Domici or Manital where the latch is a separate order. Use Mardeco or the sliding cavity sets for cavity doors. Check the thickness and backset against the product page, and read the box contents for the latch, the cylinder and the keys. That order avoids the common mistakes: a lever set with no latch, a Euro lock set with no cylinder, and a set made for a different door thickness.

Nidus handles are not stainless steel across the board, so check the material on each product page. The product pages here do not support that, so read the material line of the set you want.

What does a Nidus set include?

It depends on the range. The Knurled Domici passage and privacy sets are sold with the latch separate, and a Nidus tubular latch is a separate item in graphite grey and other finishes. Most Manital sets also sell the latch separately, while the GoGo privacy set lists a latch. Check the box line on the product page before you order, because a lever without a latch will not work on the door.

Fit numbers by range

The Spring and Collins levers are round, 128mm long with a 60mm projection, and suit doors of 34 to 45mm with a 60mm backset. They come in passage, privacy, key-in entrance, dummy and combination entry and deadbolt versions. The Lonsdale Eurobolt double cylinder suits 34 to 45mm doors with a 60mm backset.

The Mardeco flush pulls come as a radius pull at 203 by 45mm, a rectangular pull at 190 by 45mm and a long plate at 257 by 43.5mm. The Mardeco privacy and entrance sets suit 34 to 50mm doors and come in 50mm and 35mm backsets. The sliding cavity sets have round or square 65 by 65mm backplates with an end pull. The privacy sets suit 32 to 47mm doors, and the lockable entrance sets suit 35 to 55mm with three pins and a 60mm backset.

The ATZ range includes a single cylinder entrance pull handle set and a single cylinder deadbolt with a 60mm backset, and the Nidus 600mm pull handle is 304 stainless steel with a 67mm projection. Manital levers run from 130 to 140mm long, and the K410 knob has a 55mm knob, a 50mm rosette, a 57mm projection and a separate latch.

The rest of the door

The collection also holds a wall mounted door stop in gun metal grey, a concealed magnetic catch, and a fixed pin hinge at 100 by 75 by 2.5mm in graphite grey. Measure the door thickness across the edge, and measure the backset from the door edge to the centre of the hole, not across the hole itself. Check the handing, and confirm the function before you pay for the finish. If the backset is inaccurate, the latch may not reach the strike plate and the door will not close properly, so take the figures from the door and not from memory.

The Manital range includes the Imola, Erica, Ratio, Tosca, Amleto and Blade levers and the K410 knob. They are solid brass, and most sell the latch separately. The Knurled Domici levers come in graphite grey, satin brass and matte black, with the passage and privacy sets sold without the latch. Choose these two ranges when you want the weight and texture of a heavier lever, and add the latch to the order so the set is complete.

Choose the Nidus range by the job before you choose by the finish. A range made for sliding cavity doors will not fit a hinged door, and a latch made for a 60mm backset will not suit a door prepared for another size. Write down the function, the door type, the thickness and the backset, and then compare the range pages against that note, so the finish becomes the last decision and not the first.
