Arch Basins Buying Guide

Arch basins have a flat back edge and a rounded front, like an arched doorway laid flat. This collection includes the ADP Arch in smooth and fluted versions, the Otti Archie fluted basin in gloss white, matte white and matte black, and the Fienza Valentina concrete fluted arch wall basin in warm white, Tuscan, sage and warm grey. They suit Mediterranean, Japandi, modern and organic bathrooms.

What is an arch basin?

An arch basin is a basin shaped with one straight side and one curved side. The straight edge sits against the wall, and the curved front softens the vanity. The shape gives a recognisable, architectural look without taking up more space than a standard basin.

What size are the arch basins?

The ADP Arch Smooth and Otti Archie are about 415mm wide, 365mm deep and 100mm high. The ADP Arch holds 8 litres. The Fienza Valentina wall basin is larger at 465 x 360 x 119mm, holding 10.5 litres. Ceramic is fired in a kiln, so sizes can vary by about 5mm from the nominal figure. Measure the basin on site before cutting.

Should I choose smooth or fluted?

A smooth arch, such as the ADP Arch Smooth in gloss or matte white, gives a clean, simple look. A fluted arch, such as the ADP Arch Fluted, Otti Archie or Fienza Valentina, has vertical ribs around the outside that add texture and catch the light. Fluted basins suit a feature vanity and pair well with fluted joinery or tiles.

Do arch basins have a tap hole or overflow?

No. The arch basins here have no tap hole and no overflow. Pair them with a tall basin mixer on the bench or a wall mixer, and use a 32mm non-overflow waste, which is sold separately. The Otti Archie has its waste in the centre of the bowl, so choose a spout that reaches that point.

How is an arch basin installed?

The ceramic arch basins sit on top of the vanity over a waste hole and are sealed with silicone. The Fienza Valentina mounts directly on the wall and weighs 12kg, so it comes with heavy duty brackets and bolts, and the wall needs solid backing behind the lining. A tradesperson should check the wall before fixing.

How do I clean an arch basin?

Wipe ceramic arch basins daily with a soft cloth and mild cleaner, using a soft brush in the flutes. Clean the concrete Valentina only with pH-neutral products, as acids and harsh chemicals can damage concrete and its sealer. Wipe up toothpaste, make-up and dark liquids quickly on any matte finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know which basin mixer is right for my basin type?

The key factor is the height and style of your basin. For standard inset or semi-recessed basins, a regular deck-mounted basin mixer with a spout height of around 100–140mm works well. However, if you have an above-counter or vessel basin, where the bowl sits on top of the benchtop, you will need a tall basin mixer with a spout height of 180mm or more, otherwise the spout will sit below the basin rim and water will splash onto the benchtop. Wall-mounted mixers offer another option for above-counter basins, with the height controlled by your rough-in position. Always confirm basin rim height before purchasing your tapware.

What is an above counter basin?

An above counter basin (also called an above bench or vessel basin) sits on top of the vanity benchtop rather than being inset into it. The full exterior of the basin is visible, making it a strong design statement. Above counter basins are available in ceramic, stone, concrete, and composite materials in a range of shapes, round, oval, rectangular, and sculpted forms.

What tapware suits an above counter basin?

Above counter basins are typically paired with tall wall-mounted basin mixers (due to the elevated height of the basin rim) or with deck-mounted tall spout mixers positioned beside the basin on the benchtop. The spout height needs to be sufficient to clear the basin rim, this is a critical detail to check when ordering tapware. Look for tall spout mixers or wall-mounted styles specifically described as suitable for above counter basins.

What size above counter basin do I need?

Above counter basins typically range from 350mm to 500mm in diameter or width. For a single vanity with a benchtop of 600 – 900mm wide, a 400mm round basin is a popular choice. For a paired double vanity, two 350 – 380mm basins work well with adequate bench space between them for storage.

What size basin waste do I need?

Most Australian basins require a 32mm or 40mm diameter basin waste. The basin manufacturer's specifications will confirm the correct size. Ensure the thread size (typically 1¼" or 1½") matches your trap and waste pipe connection. Always check the waste specifications of your basin before ordering.
