A smart toilet combines a toilet and a bidet in one unit, washing with water and often adding a heated seat, warm air drying and a remote control. Should I buy a smart toilet or a bidet seat?
A smart toilet replaces the whole suite with a matched pan, cistern and bidet seat. A bidet seat replaces only the seat on a toilet you keep, so it must suit your pan's shape. The Caroma electronic bidet seat, for example, lists the Luna and Urbane II suites it fits. Powered seats such as the Lafeme Thea and Catania add warm water, heating and drying, while the Lafeme Una and Vera are non-electric and cold wash only, needing no power point.
What is the difference between the St George smart toilets?
- Byron: rear and front wash with adjustable pressure, a heated seat, automatic flushing, a self-cleaning wand and a night light.
- Brighton: adds a warm air dryer, wide front and pulsating wash, a removable bidet unit, a deodoriser and remote lid and seat operation.
- Coogee: adds a UV sterilised wand, an auto open and close lid and Air-mix Wonder Wash, which mixes air into the water for a gentler cleanse.
- Mosman: adds UV sterilisation of the washing water and a kick flush, so you can flush without touching a button.
What other smart toilets and bidet suites are there?
The Caroma Urbane II bidet suites pair a rimless pan with a heated, auto-opening seat, adjustable water and air temperature, oscillating and pulsating wash and LED night lighting, as a close coupled suite or Invisi Series II concealed cistern suite. The Lafeme Catania suite has a 440mm extra height rimless pan with a tornado flush. Will a smart toilet fit my bathroom?
Check three things: the set out, the inlet and the projection. The St George models have a universal trap with an S trap set out of 140 to 260mm and a P trap set out of 180mm, with a bottom water inlet. Smart toilets are often longer than standard pans; the St George models project 683 to 694mm and the Caroma close coupled bidet suite 700mm. Allow for the door swing and clear space in front.
What do I need to install a smart toilet?
An electric smart toilet or bidet seat needs a power point beside the toilet, installed by a licensed electrician, as well as a licensed plumber for the water connection. Bidet products must be WaterMark certified and include backflow protection; listed devices include atmospheric vacuum breakers on the St George and Lafeme models and dual check valves with an air gap on the Caroma seat. Use drinking water only, and check that your water pressure falls within the product's range.
How do I clean a smart toilet?
Use a pH-neutral cleaner on the pan and avoid bleach, ammonia and abrasive pads. Remove the bidet unit for cleaning where the model allows, and keep the nozzle free of mineral deposits. Self-cleaning wands rinse before and after each use.
