Lip Pull Handles Buying Guide

Lip pull handles fix to the edge of a drawer or door rather than its face, giving cabinetry a clean, near-handleless look while still providing a real grip. What is a lip pull handle?

A lip pull is an edge-mounted handle shaped like a shallow U with one side shorter than the other. The longer side sits against the back of the panel and the shorter side forms a small lip that you hook your fingers under. It is also called an edge pull or finger pull. Unlike a recessed finger pull, which is routed into the door when it is made, a lip pull screws on, so it works for new joinery and replacements alike.

Where do lip pulls work best?

Lip pulls suit handleless and minimal cabinetry. Fit them along the top edge of base drawers and doors, and along the bottom or side edge of wall cabinets, so your hand meets the lip naturally. Nothing projects from the face, so they won't catch clothing or knees in a narrow galley kitchen or small bathroom. The grip is smaller than a bar handle, so for heavy pan drawers and pantry doors choose a longer lip pull or a bar pull instead.

What size lip pull do I need?

As a starting point, choose a pull about one third of the drawer width, so around 200mm for a 600mm drawer. The Meir Oppen edge pull comes in 75mm, 150mm and 300mm lengths, which suit small vanity drawers through to wide kitchen drawers. Where hole centres are given, order by that figure rather than the overall length. Tape a strip the length of the pull to the cabinet and live with it for a day before deciding.

How are lip pulls fixed?

Lip pulls screw on from the back of the door or drawer. The Momo Handles Sola half round pull fixes to the rear of the panel, and the Momo Handles Ona is a 1mm aluminium profile, also rear-screwed. The Meir Oppen edge pulls suit cabinet walls 13mm to 18mm thick. Check the screw line on each product page and match the screw length to your panel thickness. Some designs sit in a shallow rebate for a flush finish, which is best planned with your joiner.

Which material and finish should I choose?

Aluminium suits slim profiles, such as the Momo Handles Ferrara in matt black and white and the Ona in brushed finishes. Stainless steel suits wet rooms: the Meir Oppen edge pull is 304 grade stainless steel and suits both bathroom and kitchen cabinets, and the Momo Handles Sola is stainless steel in finishes including brushed brass. Matt black hides fingerprints well, brushed nickel sits with stainless appliances, and brushed brass suits warm-toned kitchens. Keep to one dominant metal and two at most per room.

How do I clean lip pull handles?

Wipe with a soft microfibre cloth and mild detergent, then dry thoroughly. Run the cloth or a soft brush along the lip, where dust and crumbs collect. Avoid abrasive cloths, bleach and metal polish, and dry stainless steel after cleaning to prevent water spots, particularly in coastal or humid homes.
