Nero X Plus

Chrome remains the most timeless and widely used finish in Australian bathrooms due to its durability and versatility. However, matte black has become one of the most popular choices in contemporary renovations, offering a bold, sophisticated look that pairs well with white or light-toned vanities. Brushed nickel and brushed gold finishes are also trending strongly, adding warmth and a designer feel, particularly when paired with natural timber vanities and neutral stone benchtops. Gunmetal and brushed brass are gaining popularity for those seeking a more architectural or European-inspired aesthetic. Whichever finish you choose, consistency across all tapware and accessories in the same bathroom is important for a cohesive result.

For wall-mounted bath mixers, Australian plumbing practice generally positions the mixer centreline at approximately 700mm from the finished floor level, keeping in mind that most standard baths sit 550–650mm high. If you prefer the spout to sit above the bath rim for easy access, a height of 900–1050mm centreline is common for wall-mounted spouts positioned over a deck or ledge. For two people sharing the bath, consider mounting the spout centrally on a wall and the mixer offset to one side for easy reach before getting in. Always discuss final heights with your licensed plumber before rough-in.

The simplest approach is to buy your accessories from the same brand range as your tapware, many brands such as Phoenix, Caroma Urbane II, and Meir offer coordinated tap and accessory collections. If mixing brands, focus on matching the finish (e.g. brushed nickel or matte black) rather than the exact product range. Small variations in tone between brands are often barely noticeable in a finished bathroom.

The Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) scheme is a mandatory Australian government rating system that measures how water-efficient a tapware product is. Ratings run from 1 to 6 stars, the more stars, the less water the tap uses per minute. For basin mixers, a 5 or 6-star WELS rating is considered excellent and translates to meaningful long-term savings on water bills, particularly important in drought-prone Australian states. All tapware sold in Australia must carry a WELS rating, and most reputable brands now offer basin mixers rated 4 stars or higher as standard. Look for the WELS label on the product or packaging before you buy.

While bath mixers and basin mixers may look similar, they are not interchangeable. The key technical difference is the water supply connection size. This difference matters because filling a bathtub requires a significantly higher flow rate, a basin mixer simply cannot deliver water fast enough to fill a bath in a reasonable time. Always use tapware specified for bath applications when fitting out a bath, and consult your plumber if you are unsure.

A shower mixer (or shower tap) is the control valve that regulates the flow and temperature of water to your shower. A single-lever mixer controls both temperature and flow with one handle. A thermostatic mixer maintains a pre-set water temperature even if pressure changes elsewhere in the system, a safer and more convenient option, particularly for households with children. Shower mixers in Australia must comply with AS 3718 standards.
