Solid Surface Basins Buying Guide

Solid surface basins are made from a cast acrylic resin material with a smooth, matte, stone-like finish. This collection features ADP solid surface basins in under counter, semi-inset and wall-hung styles, the Otti Noosa above counter oval, the Caroma Contura 530mm inset basin and Turner Hastings Mayer washstands. They suit modern bathrooms where a soft, smooth, continuous look is the goal.

What is a solid surface basin?

Solid surface is a non-porous material cast from resin and mineral fillers. ADP describes its solid surface as a mix of 100% acrylic resins. The colour runs right through the material, so light marks can be buffed out rather than exposing a different layer underneath.

Is solid surface better than ceramic?

Each has strengths. Solid surface is lighter, warmer to touch and has a soft matte finish, and light scratches can be repaired. Ceramic is harder and more heat resistant, and keeps a gloss finish for longer. Choose solid surface for a contemporary matte look, and ceramic if heat and hardness matter most.

Which ADP solid surface basin suits my vanity?

The ADP Hope at 495 x 255mm and 4 litres has a short projection that suits shallow ensuite vanities. The ADP Sincerity is a 495 x 365mm oval and the Glory is about 550 x 360mm, holding 8 litres. Semi-inset models such as the Respect, Faith, Pride, Ozera and Zeya sit 45 to 50mm above the bench, with the Zeya at 580mm and 10 litres. The ADP Eon and Halo are compact 450mm wall-hung basins for powder rooms.

Can solid surface basins take hot water?

Yes, at normal tap temperatures. ADP gives a maximum water temperature of 65°C. Avoid placing hair straighteners, curling wands or other hot appliances directly on the basin, and do not pour boiling water into the bowl.

What tap and waste does a solid surface basin need?

Check each basin's tap hole and overflow. The Otti Noosa takes a 12 o'clock tap hole or none and needs a 32mm waste. The ADP Eon, Ozera and Zeya include an overflow, while the Glory, Pride and Noosa are non-overflow, so choose a waste to match. Under counter and semi-inset basins usually pair with a bench-mounted or wall mixer.

How do I clean and care for solid surface?

Wipe daily with warm soapy water or a mild non-abrasive cleaner, then dry. Avoid bleach, acetone, nail polish remover and strong chemical drain cleaners. Light scratches and marks can usually be removed with a gentle cream cleanser, but check the maker's care sheet before using any abrasive product.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a solid surface basin?

A solid surface basin is moulded from an engineered material, typically a blend of mineral fill and resin, rather than fired ceramic or quarried stone. Because the colour runs all the way through the material rather than sitting as a surface glaze or coating, the basin can sometimes be moulded or thermoformed to join directly with a matching solid surface benchtop, with no visible seam where basin meets bench.

Is a solid surface sink the same as a solid surface basin?

Yes, "sink" and "basin" describe the same fixture here, "sink" is used more loosely across general conversation and in the kitchen context, while "basin" is the standard Australian term for the bathroom fixture. The material and manufacturing process are identical either way: an engineered resin-and-mineral composite, moulded to shape.

How do you care for a solid surface basin?

Wipe it down with a soft cloth and a standard non-abrasive bathroom cleaner, the material is non-porous, so it resists staining from soap scum and everyday bathroom use well. Avoid placing very hot items directly on the surface, since sustained heat can mark some solid surface formulations. Light scratches can often be sanded back and polished out by a professional, since the colour goes through the material rather than sitting as a thin surface layer, which isn't possible with a glazed ceramic basin.

How is a Corian basin different from a solid surface basin?

Corian is a specific branded solid surface material, one of the original and best-known names in the category, but it isn't a distinct product type. Any basin described as Corian is a solid surface basin; not every solid surface basin is made from the Corian brand specifically, since several manufacturers produce their own solid surface formulations. The care and performance characteristics are broadly similar across brands.

How does a solid surface basin compare with a stone basin?

Stone basins are cut or moulded from natural or crushed-stone material with genuine mineral content and, for natural stone, colour variation between pieces. Solid surface is a manufactured resin composite instead, giving a more consistent, repeatable colour and the option of being repaired if scratched, which natural stone generally can't do in the same way. If a mineral, stone-derived look matters more than repairability, compare the stone basins range directly.

What mounting styles do solid surface basins come in?

Solid surface basins are available as above-counter, inset and integrated (moulded directly into a matching solid surface benchtop) styles. The integrated option is specific to solid surface, since it relies on the material being thermoformed as one continuous piece with the bench. For mounting types outside solid surface, see the bathroom basins hub.
